A Study on Media Characteristics of Digital Images and their Therapeutic Implications

Abstract
This study intended to investigate whether digital images can have the media characteristics and therapeutic implications. To achieve the goal, this study analyzed the media characteristics of digital images and examined through literature review the possibilities of applying them to art therapy. The results showed that the digital images can provide the virtual space, facilitate modification and editing, and promote interaction. The major characteristics and therapeutic implications of digital images in art therapy are as follows: First, digital images can be used as art therapy media for they have become media for ordinary use. Second, they can be useful in dealing with psychological problems of adolescents as they the media images preferred by adolescents. Third, they lessen the burden of drawing. Fourth, digital images can be used conveniently without limitation by time and space for they are accessible and popular. Fifth, they provide a safe virtual space in which to express one¡¯s thoughts and feelings. Sixth, they expand the breadth of expression for they are easy to modify and edit. Finally, they promote interaction to enhance therapeutic function. For these reasons the use of digital image in art therapy is expected to complement existing art therapy greatly. The use of digital image is also expected to expand the application of art therapy and particularly contribute to the popularization of art therapy.
